Last month we did a bit of a whistle stop tour of the shops that sell Folk in and around Milan in Italy. Now Italy is a special place for shopping as there are few department stores or multiple chains so there are a lot more interesting independent shops than we have in the UK. That combined with the Italians mild obsession with clothing has led to Folk becoming a firm favourite in the stores that stock us.
Firstly, Wok in Milan, which is an edgy little store selling a good mix of some of the shining lights of cutting edge fashion, Folk and Shofolk sits next to the likes of Opening Ceremony, Wood Wood, Henrik Vibskov and Pam
Then we headed to Planet in Treviglio. Next stop was Brescia to find Oslo, and finally, probably our favourite because of the layout, its venue in the wonderful city of Verona and the staff was Macando

The naked truth behind Folk’s creativity
If you keep really still, like an old Redwood in the Californian forest, you can sometimes catch his long ears trailing behind him as he snuffles towards the tea cupboard for his elevenses. But you’d be lucky. Mostly, Otter – Folk’s resident spirit genius, hangs out in Elbe’s Lealman’s holly-bush red hair, or Cathal McAteer’s tangly beard dishing out inspiration in Folklish. And usually only the two designers can see and hear him.
Ever since the best-selling author Elizabeth Gilbert brought it to Folk’s attention that the Ancient Romans and Greeks believed in divine attendant spirits, who were in part responsible for a person’s intellectual and creative prowess, we pleaded with the gods of Lambs Conduit Street to send us one to our HQ. We expected an ugly goblin-like creature, but got Otter instead. A hairy, bush-rabbit hybrid, who is so full of positivity and ideas he sometimes starts sneezing when he can’t keep it all in. He is truly a ‘genius’, in the original Roman sense of the word, i.e. a divine spirit who assists our thinking process and creative output.

At Folk we discovered that having a genius, rather than being one is a win/win situation. For a start, it protects you from developing too much narcissism because if a collection is a huge success, we can never take all the credit. And conversely, should a collection ever fail to inspire our loyal clientele (thankfully this has never happened and hopefully never will), it won’t be a total disaster because we can always blame it on Otter.
Because Otter has been such a big part of Folk’s growth and success, we wanted to throw a party for him and invite some other divine creative spirits. As they are mostly not visible to the human eye, we thought it would be easiest if you drew a picture of your spirit and emailed it to us at shop@folkclothing.com by 1 September. Then we’ll put all the spirits together in the tea cupboard for an afternoon, and together they can make the cups and saucers dance.
At the end of the spirit bop, Otter will hand out a prize – a £75 discount off his owner’s next Folk purchase – to his favourite genius, based on kindness, dance moves, dress-sense and life juice. Please make sure you pick your spirits up no later than 11pm on the day of the bop.
Please email your divine spirit sketches to: shop@folkclothing.com
