We’ve got some great stockists worldwide that we are delighted to be in, some of the best stores in the world including Isetan in Japan, Merci in Paris and Liberty in London, but although we sit comfortably in these stores sometimes we walk into a place and know Folk couldn’t find a better home.

This feeling came over us when we walked into Goose Barnacle in Brooklyn Heights in New York. After walking round most of the stores over a couple of days we were slightly disappointed by the level of “sameness” that we found. There’s only so many times you can hear shop assistant’s say  ”how are you today?” in a commission driven kind of way so we were delighted that we searched out the oasis that is Goose Barnacle.  Goose Barnacle is an old school store where the owner is the buyer, shop manager, store designer, art curator and chief bottle washer. That person is David Alperin.  After we spent some time soaking in the store we introduced ourselves to David who explained what his vision for the store was. David is a fashion purist and he has searched out an eclectic mix of brands that ensures that he’s not stocking the same as the barney’s and steven alan’s that are up the road. “Fashion” pieces from Henrik Vibskov and Etudes combine with “safer” pieces from  Melinda Gloss and Svensson to create an environment that feels like you are discovering, a sensation that is difficult to find in these internet days.

Goose Barnacle was established  in 2010. The name came from David’s ancestral home, La Coruna, in Northern Spain where the shellfish is a delicacy.   The building on his logo is the Roman tower of Hercules at the port. The store itself is simple with some great touches, there is always artwork on the walls (he’s onto his ninth art exhibition) and interesting bits of furniture, my favourite being the old phone boxes that he had salvaged from his grandmother’s diner at the top of the road (another story for another day). Like David, the store is welcoming without pretensions, a home from home and definitely worth a visit if you find yourself stateside.

Folk in Manchester – Oipolloi

This week we visited our good friends at Oipolloi.

Steve and Nigel, who set up the business in 2002, have a taste of their own (in a good way!) and their purity of buying sets them apart.  If imitation is the best form of flattery these guys have been chatted up a lot by other online retailers. Rather than buying deep into fashion collections they pick the best that each brand has to offer and maintain a bit of fun to proceedings by buying the pieces that more conservative stores might shy away from. They recently moved from their small shop on Tib Street to a much bigger space round the corner and the larger space maintains there eclectic feel.

One of the best stores in manchester.

Folk in Antwerp – Your

We were across in Antwerp a couple of weeks ago to see our latest Folk stockist.  ”Your” Antwerp is a 1000m2 space in the cool antique area of the city. We’re a little bit biased as it was designed by the same people that help us do our stores (IYA) but its a beautifully designed store  that has a raw feel without being too industrial that lets the product shine out.

So if your in Antwerp (which is well worth a couple of days of pottering about), have a look….

Folk in Denmark – Goods

We always welcome a visit from one of the stores that stock Folk and Shofolk abroad and last weekend we had the pleasure of Kasper, founder and owner of Goods in Copenhagen.

Kasper opened Goods in August ‘08 and it has become one of the most interesting destination mens boutiques in Denmark.   Situated in the eastern part of Copenhagen called Østerbro, GOODS is a pleasantly small store stocking brands that are rarely see in Copenhagen and Kasper has created a cosy and friendly atmosphere in and around the shop.

Folk in Munich – Harvest

After a stint helping us at Folk Philip Stolte headed back to Munich with a grand plan to open a store that offered something a little bit different in his home town. True to his word Harvest opened about a couple of months ago with a nice selection of brands and a shop fit with an exquisite attention to detail. A perfect home for Folk and Shofolk!

We asked Philip about his new store and what goes on in Munich.

Folk in Sweden – Grandpa

We recently paid a visit to the two Grandpa stores in Stockholm, Grandpa Vaster and Grandpa.  Our favourite was the one based in Sodermalm, the bohemian part of town, where the young trendies seem to rule the roost, loads of vintage stores, coffee shops, just generally a nice place to spend a few hours of your life.
